What are spiders?

Spiders are a type of predator; like other predators, their feeding habits play an important role and help to keep the populations of their prey in check.

In the case of spiders, their feeding habits help control the number of nuisance insects that live out in nature.

The problem is that spiders and the insects they eat don’t just stay outside; they regularly find their way into our homes and other structures and become a nuisance for homeowners.

Spiders are identified by their two body parts, eight legs, lack of wings and antenna, and their ability to produce silk.

There are thousands of spiders living worldwide all with unique color patterns, habitat preferences, and differences in how they hunt their prey- using webs or actively chasing down their prey.

Are spiders dangerous?

Most of the spiders living around us are harmless and if an accidental bite were to occur it typically isn't medically important.

However, a select few spiders do have venom potent enough to cause harm to people

An example of a dangerous spider is the black widow spider. A bite from a black widow spider will affect your nervous system and you should seek medical attention to manage the symptoms.

Black widow spiders have round bodies, long thin legs, and are shiny black in color. They are most easily recognized by the distinctive red hourglass shape on the underside of their abdomens. If you ever spot what you think is a black widow spider on your property, immediately reach out to a professional that can accurately identify the spiders and then remove them.

Why do I have a spider problem?

Spiders have become a problem in your home because they are looking for food or because they have followed their food (insects) indoors. If you are seeing large numbers of spiders or spider webs in your home, know that you also likely have populations of insects in your home.

Where will I find spiders?

Spiders like to stay in quiet areas away from a lot of traffic. Some of their favorite places to hang out, either in our yards or homes, are listed below.

  • Inside of grass, gardens, and other vegetation
  • Potted plants that are either inside or outside of your home
  • Inside of woodpiles, rock walls, or brush piles
  • Dark spaces like attics, crawl spaces, and closets
  • Within folded pieces of laundry or bedding, or inside shoes.
  • Around light fixtures
  • Near trashcans
  • Areas of moisture like leaky pipes, spigots, or standing water
